Introduction

Riverside Inverclyde adopted a twin track approach to secure the long term economic growth of Inverclyde : “going for growth” through the exploitation of existing and new opportunities; and “spreading the benefits of growth” to local residents and businesses across Inverclyde.

“Spreading the benefits of growth” has been a multi-faceted approach, for example :

The introduction of community benefits clauses in key contracts that provides job opportunities for Inverclyde new entrants to construction and those unemployed for greater than 6 months, delivered via our employment intermediary partner, Inverclyde Community Development Trust as part of Inverclyde’s Construction Plus group, chaired by Inverclyde Council’s Social & Economic Regeneration team;
The setting up of Inverclyde Construction Forum to increase the competitiveness and skills of Inverclyde’s construction industry supply chain companies in order to open up more opportunities for their businesses;
The restoration and refurbishment of Ladyburn School into an eye-catching building for social enterprise companies and artists;
Upgrading Victoria House, Drumfrochar and Lynedoch Industrial Estates to provide much needed office and business facilities at premium rates;
Environmental improvement works at Port Glasgow Industrial Estate to revitalise the area and make it safer and more attractive to future investors;
Providing sponsorship and grants to support and encourage the development of new businesses for Inverclyde residents via organisations and activities such as Prince’s Scottish Youth Business Trust; Greenock Chamber of Commerce’s Bees Knees initiative; The Recruit;
A grant programme for youth sporting clubs;
Working with community groups in supporting their aspirations eg a Greenock Central Residents’ Action Group’s playpark project; Greenock Burns Club’s restoration of Highland Mary’s monument and grave site; community consultations; town centre improvements; school projects; local competitions; Sugar Warehouse tours etc; and
Working with James Watt College to identify opportunities for young people to support the offshore renewables growth industry.
