ASTO Small Ships Races
ASTO, the Association of Sail Training Organisations, has been running Small Ships Races from United Kingdom ports since 2002.
The term “Small Ships” is misleading as they are really quite large monohull yachts capable of carrying 12 or more crew and young people.
The passage race will start at 2.30pm on Tuesday 11th August and prior to the setting off, the 15 to 20 participating yachts will parade with their sail hoisted, from Victoria Harbour along Greenock Waterfront to the start line off Ashton in Gourock.
In Belfast, where a four day long maritime event is planned to entertain both the crews from the ships and the visiting public, the Small Ships fleet will join the Tall Ships which will have sailed from Nova Scotia in the Trans Atlantic Challenge Race.
Riverside Inverclyde is keen to support sail training and hopes to give two young people aged 16 – 24 years the opportunity to sail in the ASTO Small Ships Races.
