Town Centres

One of Riverside Inverclyde’s principal strategic objectives is to ”Enhance the competitiveness of Inverclyde as a place to live, work, visit, invest and do business in” which will be achieved directly by enhancing the area’s image and perception through investment in place making.

The capital investment initiated by Riverside Inverclyde throughout the town centres of Greenock, Port Glasgow and Gourock include such varied projects as new town centre entrance signage, improving pedestrian safety and access, remediation of vacant and derelict sites, streetscape landscape projects which enhance and improve how a town centre looks and operates, shop front and signage improvement projects, redevelopment of vacant sites to provide car parking facilities, structural remodeling of business premises, aspirational public art entrance features, floral displays, shop canopies, stone cleaning and painting, etc all with the intention being to create an environment where economic growth can be stimulated and where the quality of life within the community can be improved.

The investment being made in these town centre projects is primarily about maximizing the potential to change “place image” positively, influence location decisions and to visitors and footloose economic and residential investment. The return on capital invested will be derived from the consequential attractiveness of the town centres and subsequently Inverclyde as a location to live, work and play.

The improvements will also help retain existing and attract new customers to the retail cores and maximise the footfall within the town centres. The entrance portals and main shopping streets are being upgraded to provide more distinctive, modern and welcoming image to shoppers, investors and visitors. This is being achieved by introducing bespoke quality signage, landscaping and public art designed to convey a perception of a modern, vibrant, town centres. These new and retained customers will help sustain vitality and help promote business development opportunities and encourage enterprise to flourish in the retail and service sectors.
